Basic First Aid Course Overview

This course is 6 hours long and includes content from Perform CPR. There are no entry requirements but it is recommended that participants have basic literacy skills. Learners with Language, Literacy and Numeracy problems can be offered an oral assessment if preferred.

Note: The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends a resuscitation refresher course be taken every 12 months.

Participants will be assessed at the end to show they have acquired the skills and knowledge to manage life-threatening situations. This will include a combination of theory and practical assessment. Assessments can be done to simulate work place conditions if practical to do so. Trainees will have to demonstrate competency in all sections to qualify for a Statement of Attainment.

On successful completion of the course you should be able to:

  • Assess an emergency situation
  • Manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • Administer First Aid for Minor Wounds & Apply Infection Control Procedures
  • Provide CPR – Maintain the airway, breathing and circulation of an unconscious casualty
  • Explain legal and ethical responsibilities of a first aider
