OHS Manual Handling Course: Carry out work in a safe manner within a healthcare environment. Work will usually be done within a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.

OHS Manual Handling Course Overview

There are no entry requirements but participants are expected to have basic literacy skills. The session goes for 3-4 hours. It is also important that trainees attend each session of this course to be eligible for a “Statement of Attainment” in HLTWHS005 – Conduct Manual Tasks Safely. Students who have Language, Literacy and Numeracy difficulties will be offered an oral assessment alternative if they choose.

Skills Aquired

  • Understand the meaning of “Manual Handling”
  • Demonstrate knowledge of manual handling risks and hazards in the workplace
  • Describe the “Codes of Practice” for manual handling
  • Identify additional risk factors when completing manual handling tasks
  • Apply “Codes of practice” for manual handling hazards and risks
  • Describe workplace procedures and policies for return to work programs and injury reporting.

Assessment Procedure

Assessment will be conducted during and at the end of the course to demonstrate achievement of appropriate skills and knowledge safe manual handling practices. This will consist of

  • Theory Assessment requiring satisfactory completion of all questions.
  • Practical Skill Competencies – demonstrate competency in all skills as detailed above, conducted in simulated work conditions if practical.

Note: Health industry requirements recommends that this course be refreshed annually
